Puppy Training Basics: The Complete Guide to Raising a Well-Behaved Dog (From Day One)

Bringing a new puppy home is one of the best feelings in the world.

It’s exciting, chaotic, and full of questions.

  • Am I doing this right?
  • Where do I even start?
  • Why won’t my dog listen?

If that sounds like you, you’re in exactly the right place.

(The full video course is linked here)

This guide will walk you through the foundations of dog training, so you can go from overwhelmed to confident… and start building a calm, well-behaved dog from day one.

🧠 How Dogs Actually Learn (Most People Get This Wrong)

Let’s clear something up first:

👉 Dogs do NOT understand English.

If you’re repeating:

“Sit… sit… sit… sit…”

Your dog isn’t learning, they’re just hearing noise.

So what actually works?

Dogs learn through:

  • Repetition
  • Timing
  • Association

They begin to understand:

“When I do THIS… I get rewarded.”

That’s it.

🍖 Why Treats Are So Powerful in Training

If you want fast results, you need motivation.

And the best motivator?

👉 High-value food rewards

This is why I personally use high-reward treats like sausage during training, because it creates:

  • Focus
  • Drive
  • Faster learning

⚠️ The 2 Rules That Change Everything

Before ANY training session:

1. Your dog must have burned some energy

  • Play
  • Run around the house
  • Tug games

2. Your dog must be slightly hungry

  • Don’t train right after meals

👉 A tired + hungry dog = ready to learn

Ignore this, and training becomes 10x harder.

⏱️ Keep Training Sessions Short (This Is Key)

Puppies get bored FAST.

👉 Keep sessions:

  • 5–10 minutes max
  • Always end on a win

You want your dog thinking:

“That was fun, I want more”

Not:

“I’m bored, I’m done”

🪑 Step 1: Teaching Your Dog to Sit

We start with the most basic behaviour, the sit.

But here’s the mistake most people make:

❌ Saying the word “sit” over and over
✅ Letting the dog learn the movement first

How to Teach “Sit” (The Right Way)

  1. Take a small piece of food
  2. Hold it above your dog’s head
  3. Let them naturally move into a seated position
  4. The SECOND their bum hits the floor → reward

👉 No command word yet.

Just repetition.

When Do You Add the Word “Sit”?

Only when your dog starts doing it consistently.

Then:

  • As their bum hits the floor → say “sit”
  • Reward immediately

Over time:
👉 Word = behaviour

⏳ Step 2: Building Duration (Making Sit Reliable)

Getting your dog to sit is one thing.

Getting them to stay sitting is where real training begins.

How to Build Duration

Start small:

  • Sit → reward instantly
  • Sit → reward after 1 second
  • Sit → reward after 2 seconds

Gradually increase over time.

Real-Life Training Opportunities

You don’t need a perfect setup.

Train during everyday life:

  • Before meals
  • Before opening the door
  • While putting shoes on
  • When guests arrive

👉 This is how you build a well-mannered dog, not just a trained one.

🛑 Step 3: Teaching “Down”

“Down” is slightly harder — so expect it to take longer.

How to Teach “Down”

  1. Lure into a sit
  2. Move the treat down to the floor
  3. Let your dog follow it into a lying position
  4. The SECOND elbows hit the floor → reward

Again:
👉 No command word yet

Key Tip

Never force your dog into position.

If they don’t understand:
👉 You need more reps, not more pressure

✋ Step 4: Teaching “Wait” (One of the Most Important Skills)

This is where your dog learns control.

How to Teach “Wait”

  1. Put your dog in a sit or down
  2. Hold or place a treat in front of them
  3. Wait for them to back off or hesitate
  4. The SECOND they do → reward

Build It in Stages

  • 1 second wait
  • 2 seconds
  • 5 seconds
  • Increase distance gradually

Why “Wait” Matters

This isn’t just a trick, it’s safety.

  • Opening the front door
  • Getting out of the car
  • Around other dogs

👉 “Wait” can literally protect your dog’s life

🔁 The Secret to Success: Repetition & Consistency

Here’s the truth:

You won’t fix your dog in one session.

You need:
👉 Hundreds (even thousands) of repetitions

But don’t panic, this happens naturally with:

  • Daily 5–10 minute sessions
  • Real-life practice

🏡 Turn Everyday Life Into Training

You don’t need to “find time” to train.

Just use what you already do:

  • Feeding time → sit & wait
  • Door opening → sit & wait
  • Getting dressed → sit
  • Guests arriving → calm behaviour

👉 Small moments = big results

🧘♂️ Why Training Actually Calms Your Dog

Training isn’t just about obedience.

It:

  • Mentally stimulates your dog
  • Reduces destructive behaviour
  • Builds focus
  • Creates calmness

A trained dog is:
👉 A tired, fulfilled, well-behaved dog

💡 Final Thoughts

If you take one thing from this guide, let it be this:

👉 Training is a daily habit, not a one-time event

Even the best-trained dogs:

  • Practice daily
  • Reinforce behaviours
  • Stay consistent

Your Next Step

Start simple:

  • 5–10 minutes today
  • Focus on ONE behaviour
  • Use high-value rewards
  • Be consistent

And remember:

You’re not just training a dog…

You’re building:
👉 A calm, confident, well-behaved companion for life
